Why Do People Shout at Each Other When They are Angry?

A Saint asked his disciples, ‘Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?’

Disciples thought for a while, then one of them said, ‘Because we lose our calm, we shout for that..’

‘But, why shout when the other person is just next to you?’ asked the saint.   ‘Isn’t it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice?’   Why do you shout at a person when you’re angry?’

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint. Finally he explained,  ‘When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance, they must shout to be able to hear each other.  The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.’

Then the saint asked, ‘What happens when two people fall in love?  They don’t shout at each other but talk softly.  Why? Because their hearts are very close.  The distance between them is very small…’

The saint continued, ‘When they love each other even more, what happens?  They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love.

Finally they need not even whisper, they only look at each other and that’s all.   That is how close two people are when they love each other.’

MORAL : When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that distance each other more, else there will come a day when the distance will be so great that you will not find the path to return.

Never fall in arguments with dear ones;  it may happen that you win the arguments but lose the person.

In the end:

Sometimes, it is better to lose the argument than lose the person and the relationship…

  1. Ancient Sparta believed that the man who yelled the loudest was the man who won the argument.

That’s probably why Western civilization venerates Athens today rather than those brawny bumpkins.

    Very inspiring post.

    Thanks for your insight.

  2. that was one creative way of explaining that but given the opportunity to talk to the saint I would gladly explain to him the reason why people shout when they are angry.

it is simply because people like that don’t know how to listen and it is a skill only few people was able to master. a person during his angry moment is trying to force his own point of view to the other person and commonly disregarding or failing to listen to the other person whom he is speaking. They both can hear each other but both fail to listen.

the funny thing is… both of them is right and will never be wrong!

    • hi bright,

      thanks for dropping by..
for me, Christ’s true followers are those who follow His commandments: 1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 2) Love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:36-40)

  4. Where I come from, people are taught in schools how to communicate with each-other, so as to channel their energy into resolving issues swiftly, leaving everybody happy with the outcome.

  5. First of all I want to say great blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.

I have had trouble clearing my mind in getting
my ideas out there. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the
first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin.
Any recommendations or tips? Thank you!

    • I believe to be a good writer one must be a good reader first. Read articles of great writers for inspiration. If you read them enough, their excellent writing style will rub off onto you.

Focus on the positive intention behind your writing. What is it that you want to communicate? Don’t worry about the length of the article as long as it conveys the point. Of course, the fewer words you use, the better.

As Mark Twain said, “the secret of getting ahead is getting started.” Hence, to be a good writer one must start writing everyday. One page everyday is a good start. Allow ideas to come and flow through you. Then write as if you’re on deadline and your mind and hands will follow your will.

Thanks for dropping by and I do hope the above helps. Have a great journey in writing and I look forward to reading some of your blogs. 
